Benny Pierce The president was Franklin Pierce. His son was Benjamin Pierce and he was eleven years old when he was killed. Benny was the third child born to his father and his mother, Jane Means Appleton Pierce. Their first son lived for only a few days. Their second son died of Typhus at age 4. The death of her only remaining child put Jane into a deep depression from which she never recovered. She was never able to fulfill the duties expected of a first lady, which were taken over by relatives.
Pierce was 41 when he joined up in May, 1846.

The third son, Benjamin, died at age 11, in a tragic train accident not long before his father became President, January 6.1853. The family on a train pulling out from the station at Andover, NH, when the car they were in developed a bad wheel making it drag and become uncoupled from the traiin. It rolled down an embankment and crashed . Benjy was sitting on a bench behind his parents and was hit by flying debris which cut off the back of his head, killing him instantly. Nobody else was seriously hurt.
Pierce was 15 when entered college in 1820, but turned 16 in November of his first year.
