Most people believe that Castes and Varnas are the same. Thus, Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra are Varnas and not Castes.
Caste is determined at birth and, excluding a few exceptions, can't be changed after birth.
A Varna is a grade of efficiency and is a measure of the gap between the positive and negative attitudes. Greater this gap greater would be the freedom but lesser would be the efficiency. Thus, Shudra Varna is best suited for chaotic conditions and Brahmana Varna for ideal conditions.
The Varna can be changed if living conditions become better or worse permanently.
The Varnas evolved into Castes because Hindus used to have the authority of Brahmana Varna and the freedom of Shudra Varna and used to change Varna just to take undue advantages.
A Caste is made of elements from all the four Varnas and is depends on occupation, geographical location and other needs of people. There are more than two thousand five hundred castes and about twentyfive thousand subcastes.
From highest to lowest, the levels or varnas are:
Brahmans - scholars, teachers, and priests
Kshatriyas - warriors, military, and ruling elite
Vaishyas - merchants, cattle herders, and artisans
Sudras - servants and laborers
Below these is a level referred to commonly as "untouchables." They are known by various names including Panchamas (5th varna), Ashprush (untouchables), Harijans (Children of God), and Dalits (literally broken people).
The number of castes in Hinduism:There are about 3000 castes and 25, 000 sub castes in Hinduism. They can't be stratified because their status is not the same in all parts of India. We should not use Castes and Varnas as synonyms.
There are mainly four castes with number of sub-divisions.
The Following are the caste-ranks:
1. Brahmin. - Highest.
2. Kshatriya.
3. Marchent (Vaishya).
4. Untouchables (Kshudra) Lowest.
The highest level caste is the Brahman, followed by the Kshatriya, the Vaishya, and the
Sudra. Below these are the Dalits, groups formerly known as "Untouchables".
Starting from the top: Brahmins (teachers and priests), Ksatriyas (warriors and rulers), Vaishyas (farmers and merchants), Shudras (laborers), and the Untouchables.
Brahmins hold the highest position and the shudras hold the lowest position
Brahmin, Vaishya, Sudra, Untouchables
In the Hindus the Brahmins are the highest class. They are referred to as the learned class and priestly tribe among Hindus. The lowest class are the Dalits.
