Should kids be able to watch R rated movies?

That is a question that every parent must answer for themselves, in regards to their own children. Nobody has the right to make such decisions about a child except their parents.

And all R-rated movies are not the same. The type of adult content (i.e., sexuality, drug use, foul language, violence and other criminal acts), as well as the amount and severity of it, differs from movie to movie. So, rather than making an all-encompassing decision to let their child watch all R-rated movies or none, most sensible parents would consider each R-rated movie on a case-by-case basis. Perhaps some parents feel that it's okay for their child to view sexual content, but not violence. Perhaps some others feel it's okay for their child to view violence and sexual content, but not drug use. And some others may feel that violence and foul language are okay, but sexuality is not.

It's up to the parent to research the type and severity of adult content, and then decide whether the movie is appropriate for their child or not. All R-rated movies are not the same, and furthermore, all children are not the same. No specific age is given in regards to this question; the question asks whether "kids" should watch R movies. "Kids" could refer to anyone from age 3 to age 16. Obviously, what is appropriate for a 3-year-old is different than what is appropriate for a 16-year-old. Moreover, kids of the same age can have very different sensibilities. A violent Horror movie could give one 11-year-old nightmares, while another 11-year-old would not be negatively affected by it.

So, even if it were appropriate to make decisions about what other people's children should watch, the answer depends on the age and emotional maturity of the child, and on what kind of R-rated content it is.
