Should your resume be folded or not?

When mailing out a resume, there's nothing wrong with folding it so it will fit in an envelope. However, you want to make sure that the way in which you fold it is professional! So it's not like folding a note that you will keep in your pocket. It's a business document that you're folding. But if you are going to attend a networking event, then no, you don't want your resume to be folded.

I've advised plenty of job-seekers, put tons of resumes together, and have taught job-hunting. What I can tell you is that most employers don't care if it's folded! We mail all sorts of important documents that are folded, such as contracts, etc. So folding a resume is no big deal. All that matters is that it looks professional and is easy to read! Here's advice published by Resume Edge (they're an online consulting group that charges about $100 to professionally rewrite resumes and cover letters): "Regardless of the paper you choose, mail your resume flat instead of folded. It costs a few extra cents in postage and a little more for the 9 x 12 envelope, but the impression it makes is well worth the extra cost. It also helps with the scannability of your resume. I really don't care if the resumes I receive from professionals seeking new assignments are flat or folded. The large majority I receive as a retained search consultant are folded. And by the way, sending them in hard copy as opposed to the internet makes much more of an impression.
