The duties and responsibilities of an accounting clerk will vary according to the needs of his/her employer and also their company's industry. However, generally it is an entry level position that provides hands on experience in many accounting areas. It also plays an integral part in training new or aspiring Accountants to perform more advanced accounting skills. They often have individual responsibilities, but also assist supervisors or department heads with many other duties. Depending on the size and structure of the company for which they work, the accounting clerk may report to one or more of the following: an Office Manager, an Accounting Manager, Supervisor of a specific department, a Controller, an Owner, or CFO.

Some of the accounting clerk's duties may include reconciling bank statements, coding and entering Accounts Payable, preparing payments (checks) for signature, invoicing, managing accounts receivable and/or customer account collections, inventory control, file management, purchasing needs, Budgeting and Forecasting, and cost accounting.

Office clerks and receptionists are employed in various organizations, with the largest being Schools, Healthcare facilities and Federal, state, and local governments. All companies need employees that understand business protocol, grammar and correspondence skills, and basic software. Office clerks are often the first interaction clients have with a company and they need to make a good first impression. Therefore, companies highly prize employees that can do a variety of tasks, especially communication and computer skills, instead of specializing in just one skill. With 738,000 office clerk and receptionist positions being added from 2010-2020, it is no surprise that this career has strong growth potential in the coming years.
