The 'White Nile' is so named because of the light coloured clay sediment suspended in the water giving the river a light gray colour.
The 'Blue Nile' is so-called because during flood times the water current is so high, it changes colour to an almost black and in the local Sudanese language the word for black is also used for the colour blue.
In Khartoum where the two rivers meet you can actually see one is visibly blue and the other white/ grey
It is unknown where the Blue Nile got its name. The water of this river is actually brown due to the fertile soil in it.
