A Greek overlay on a local culture - it arose from Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire, after which he tried to impose Greek culture and established Greek-style city-states as a civilising process. After his death, his generals split up his empire amongst them, and we call these new countries the Hellenistic Kingdoms (Egypt, Syria etc). The result was largely superficial and there was progressive reversion to the underlying cultures until the Muslim invasions swept much of it away.

The Greeks called themselves Hellenes, and still do. Greek is a Roman word. Hellenism pertains to the Greek culture and is not a blend.

Hellenistic is a word we use to describe the kingdoms set up by Alexander's successors who carved up his empire amongst themselves. Today we call them the Hellenistic Kingdoms. Hellenistic means 'like Greek' which implies the Greek overlay on the various different peoples in the kingdoms - Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Syrian etc.

Hellenistic = like Hellenic (Greek). Alexander and his successors tried to introduce Hellenic culture on the Persian Empire after they took it over. They had limited success - amongst the upper classes who were Macedonian and Greek, but the ordinary people went on with their own cultures.
