The color blue in this story represents life since it is the first room of the seven and the last room represents death. All seven rooms symbolize the Prince's life also the fact that the seven rooms start at blue the east and end in the west black. This can be interperated as the sun rising and setting.

Blue, Purple, Green, Orange, White, Violet, and Black-drapes-with-Red-windows, in order from east to west.

Also, I know that purple and violet are listed twice, but that's as written - I don't believe 'indigo' was in common usage.

In the first six rooms the color of the window pane matches

the color of the room. In the seventh room however they are

'scarlet, a deep blood color'.

All of them were very nicely decorated and each room had it's own color. The most dangerous room was the black room where the ebony grandfather clock was that had a window looking out to the plague infested city.
