In the Constitution Sec 8, Clause 1 Government is given the right to levy taxes upon the citizens for Common Good purposes such as Defence, Debt, etc. The Legislative Power to tax was upheld and sanctioned by the Judicial branch via court precedents such as Evan v Gore, Miles v Groham & Collector v Day...the cumulative result of which is that even Government employees are not exempt from taxation--they are to be taxed in the same manner as other US Citizens & Residents.
