you can change the fluid, but not the filter. drain the fluid from the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and refill from the dipstick. the filter is only accessable by overhauling the transmission

On the side, about half way up. I believe a 3/8 rachet fits in it to unscrew.

Actually , there isn't a drain plug , you would have to drop the transmission pan if you want to change the transmission filter ( or , have a transmission flush done by a shop which I've had done twice on my 1995 Ford Explorer and plan on having done again )

Your manual transmission does not have a dipstick , the fluid level is checked at the fill plug on the drivers side of the transmission. When you take the fill plug out ( after cleaning the area around the plug ) the fluid level should be at the bottom of the fill plug hole
