The military will pretty much run things the way they wish to. The individual had the right to refuse a Summary Courts Martial, but that usually meant going to a Special Courts Martial. Since a Summary CM isn't considered a Federal charge, it doesn't appear in their criminal history so most of them will accept the process, which is a lot simpler than a full trial. A Special CM conviction would show up as a Federal Crime in the criminal record. The hearing could have been held in hospital room easily enough. I served as a Summary Courts Martial an many occassions, and the results ran from 'Not Guilty" to Guilty and recommendation for max sentence allowed.
