A USB Flash drive is considered a storage medium. Data can be both read, stored, and sent to / from a USB Flash drive, but it does not in itself input or output any data.

Short

Yes and no, depends on the device. USB is an interface and can do both input and output (I/O).

Long

Hot-swappable means you do not need to power down your computer, hub or laptop to connect or disconnect a Universal Serial Bus device from its port. Ask yourself, can I complete my tasks if I remove it. Even though they have their own drivers, it is advisable to ensure that you have saved your work properly before disconnection, or allow software updates or function finish first.

All three types are of a rectangular-like appearance with female connectors, the bits that you find at the each end cables), with slight differences between the upper and lower parts of the head when you look at it from the top, to ensure that it goes in successfully only one way. The three types A, B and mini have a USB logo usually denoting the top side.

Type A connectors always remind me of a snake. The top has two squares that remind me of like fangs holes. Inside the bottom half is lined with a plastic protrusion that has four pins embedded within that reminds me of a tongue. Thank goods it does not protrude out. USB ports are mainly found on computers, laptops and hubs. Connectors are found on dongles, speakers, joy pads, games' sticks and keyboards.

Type B connectors smaller and square but appears to have an almost hexagonal top half narrowing near the top. Supports bigger peripherals, such as printers, scanners, storage devices and many others.

Type C is a much smaller irregular rectangle which connects to digital cameras, ebooks, smart phones, plugs and music players.

Comparable to Firewire - IEEE

A USB port is not in itself an I/O device, rather a host to said devices.

You could have a keyboard or microphone connected through USB, which are input devices.

You could also have a printer or speakers hooked up through USB, and those happen to be output devices.
