Japan imports machinery and equipment, foodstuffs because there isn't much space to produce them domestically, and fuels like 90% of oil and gas because Japan doesn't have these resources. It also imports chemicals, textiles and raw materials because it is cheaper than producing them domestically.

Any country wants to export their goods to establish a favorable trade balance. If a country is importing more than they are exporting, they have a trade deficit. This can damage that nation's industries and create unemployment and debt.

There is quite simply not enough land(to produce all food categories) to support the population... 140million people in such a small space :-)
