John Hanson was the first president of the Continental Congress which was a loose confederation of the colonies that soon declared their independence from Britain and later banded together to form the United States of America. Hanson's job was mostly to chair meetings --- he had no powers at all like the powers of the US President, but in a way, he was the first president in America . Some people like to say that John Hanson was really the first president, but he was not the first President of the United States.

George Washington was the first president of the United States of America.

Such a claim as this is indeed difficult to defend. As the Father of our Country, Washington served our growing nation with honor, doing all he could to get a young nation up on its feet. After his service in the Revolutionary War, Washington only wanted to go back to his Mount Vernon home; but despite all of this, he heard the call to serve his country. The rest, as one could say, is history.

As a suggestion, I recommend that you read history of the era, as well as the words of Washington. After the course of this reading, see if your opinion of Washington changes.
