Best Answer

No. Suprisingly, he was a Marxist.

***Second Opinion

No, functionalism doesn't arise until Emile Durkheim's time - a bit later in history. The idea that society functions like an organism, an organism searching for its internal equilibrium, would be patently ridiculous to Marx who saw only conflict and opportunity for emancipation.

Marx's ideas emphasized the liberation of humanity from oppressive social structures, and he viewed human liberation from class oppression as a central goal. Therefore, some scholars argue that Marx's philosophy contained elements of Humanism. However, Marx also critiqued traditional humanism for its focus on individualism and argued for a more collective approach to addressing social issues.

Yes, as evidenced by many passages in his writings, such as the Sixth Thesis on Feuerbach from The German Ideology where he states: "Feuerbach resolves the essence of religion into the essence of man. But the essence of man is no abstraction inherent in each single individual. In its reality it is the ensemble of the social relations." (MECW v. 5, p. 4.) Marx's famous rendering of his theory of historical materialism in his 1859 preface to the Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy reaffirms his earlier statements that posited that the nexus of relations that constitute the production of the material means of life is more fundamental than individual consciousness. Collectivism follows of necessity from these presuppositions.

There was a period where Marx wrote about humanism and believed that the processes of production in capitalism increasingly alienated people. The working class in capitalism became dehumanized. Marx suggested that capitalism prevented the people of the working class from understanding their true nature and from understanding their real interests. Therefore, people were unaware of what they could achieve. So in a way, Marx can be considered to have a time where he was bit humanist.
