Deciding who was right or wrong in a war is difficult, especially if you're only taught from one point of view. Neither side should be classified as 'good' or 'bad', as both had valid reasons for fighting. The Confederates, the states in rebellion, were fighting for the rights they felt they were denied by the U.S. Constitution, as well as defending their agrarian, aristocratic society. They felt that they had ceased to have any power in the government, and felt it was within their rights to leave the Union. The Union side, however, felt the Confederate states were simply rebelling, and so fought to protect the integrity of the nation, arguing that if they allowed the Confederate states to leave the Union, others might follow.
