Yes. It was in 1571 off the coast of Greece. The Turks has been planning a large scale invasion of Italy for months. The Pope (Pius V) had been warning the powers of Europe (England and France) about the rumored invasion, but his warnings fell on deaf ears as both of those countries were in the midst of great turmoil due to religious Reformation. Only Don Juan of Austria, was stirred by the warnings. Despite his youth (and his modest political standing), Don Juan sent out urgent appeals and eventually gathered a formidable outfit. He gathered fleets from Venice and Genoa, from Spain, and from the Knights of Malta. In a deliberately preemptive strike, blessed by the pope, this small fleet set sail to catch the Turkish armada before it left the waters of Greece. The battle took place on the morning of October 7th.
