Yes. Before WW1 they used to go head on in a strait line... I mean that's great and all but where are you gonna get your target practice in? No. I'm just kidding. But they used to walk just in strait lines and shoot and then when that part of the row was gone another would take its place. So in some ways it was preffered. But there were disadvantages too. Say if you were packed in a whole and someone threw a gas bomb down in there you would be pretty screwed right? Well you might be thinking... "did they have masks?" Well your right they did but it wasn't enough to supply everyone with so it got to the point that you basically faught your body on the same side for that mask. And then while you were reachin for that mask or beating your buddy up for one then you would get ambushed. While you are panicking for a mask they are planning.

AnswerI don't think it was preferred, by anyone. Entrenching is basically a defensive strategy that was forced on the troops by the suprising effectiveness of artillery and especially the machine gun. Basically, there was no cover so they had to dig trenches or be mowed down. It was a short-term solution that turned into a long-term nightmare.

The commanders didn't like trench warfare because it wasn't decisive. Both sides fought for years, losing tens of thousands of men, for a few square yards of soil.

The fighting men certainly hated trench warfare. You can't imagine how horrible the trenches were. They were often deep in mud, sometimes up to your waist. There were no facilities for sanitation (bathrooms) or baths. Almost everyone was infested with lice, which itched constantly. Sometimes due to troop shortages a company would be in the trenches for weeks at a time. There was never enough food, and rats (literally) as big as cats would eat through your pack to get at any scrap of bread. The rats also feasted on the bodies rotting in no-mans land, the area between the enemy trenches. The French, in particular, had a habit of burying the dead inside the walls of trenches, which meant an artillery hit could unearth the decaying bodies of friends killed weeks or months ago.

After the war, many men said the unsanitary and miserable conditions in the trenches were more devastating than the fear of battle, or the Horror of killing.

There were some bunk houses and shelters built, especially in the support trenches. And, the Germans entrenched first, on higher ground, so they had marginally better conditions. Also, the Germans invested more time and resources in making the trenches comfortable. Still, I don't think anyone would call it a 'preferred' method of warfare.

Why was trench warfare such a costly way of fighting a war?

Trench Warfare was a costly way to wage war because it was essentially a 400 mile long Stalemate. The Trenches were essentially the Central Powers digging to maintain what Territorial Gains they had won during the initial offensive, and the Allied Forces attempting to Reclaim lost ground. What developed was a Network of Trenches on each side, with Machine Guns on the Front Lines and High Explosive Artillery Shells raining down Shrapnel Overhead. The French did not even have time to bury their dead and sometimes decomposing bodies would stay in the Trench for Months with Soldiers fighting desperately for survival. Not to mention that this was before the Geneva Convention outlawed the Use of Gas Warfare, which brings the horrifying aspect of being Gassed in the Trenches. (This happened to Hitler, who was Austrian, not German.) Trench warfare was Brutal and death was everywhere. It lasted like that for four years until Germany Surrendered on False Pretenses under Starvation.

What was the fighting of World War 1 like?

Real bloody! WWI consisted of a lot of trench warfare. It was relatively hard to push back enemy forces, and war tactics revolved mainly on placement and digging of trenches. Between two opposing trenches was a neutral land where it was easy to get killed. Storming an opposing trench was very difficult.

What was the trench warfare and why was it difficult in World War 1?

Trench warfare was when the soldiers would sit in large dug out holes and pop their heads up to shoot at the enemies. They did this because the flat land they were fighting on held no place to hide or conduct surprise attack. They would basically just be in these trenches trying to kill their enemies. It was difficult to gain any land and move while they were fighting because as soon as you got out of the trench you were an easy target. The armies would lose the majority of their soldiers during these fights. It was difficult because they were in these trenches for days on end and they would often get flooded with water which would get into their shoes and cause oozing sores. They didn't really have any supplies on the way either They had not much food or fresh clothes, (not even underwear!) and it was sort of like waiting in line to get shot.

What was trench war fair like in World War 1?

Trench Warfare is a very poor way to fight any war. Basically, in WW1, you had the US and Germany fighting against each other. Each side would take a "time out" and constructs these massive trenches for their men to eat and sleep in. When the trenches were complete, the Generals of each side would line their men up in "waves" as the called them. Then, the first "wave" of men from the US side would climb out of the trench onto land, and run towards the German trenches. This posed a huge disadvantage to us because the German Forces had develped Machine Guns. Basically, any US man that climbed out of the trench was immediately taken out by the German machine guns. Very impractical, and very stupid way of fighting any war.
