However, the next people to arrive were the Spaniards, when Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain in 1494 AD. The Spanish stayed here until the English kicked them out in the year 1665 AD. So, the Spaniards were not the first group to settle in Jamaica, but thet were the first Europeans to do so.
