Black people weren't allowed to be education during slavery. It was illegal for them to know how to read and write. After slavery was abolished things weren't much better. There were schools for blacks but they were poorly equipped and didn't have many teachers. White people didn't like these new schools and often vandalised school buildings and attacked and sometimes killed the teachers.

Generally, slaves weren't educated because their masters feared that if they were educated, the slaves would become rebellious and decide to escape. There is some evidence that a small number of so-called "house-slaves" were given some basics of literacy (simple reading and arithmetic skills), but they were the exceptions. The vast majority of slaves were forced to remain illiterate, as a way to control them.

Some were educated but not all; some slave owners let their slaves learn how to read and write.

Masters were not kind to their slaves due to a belief in the superiority of their own race, a desire to maintain control and power over others, and economic interests that benefited from the labor of enslaved individuals.
