Eating habits vary quite considerably across the country, but common foodstuffs which Ghanaians consume include rice; yams (a kind of "sweet potato"); plantains; cassava (a tuber crop, like yam); products made from groundnuts (peanuts), corn and maize; spinach and other vegetables; eggs; chicken; beef; goat meat; and fish, all often accompanied by or served up in various hot, spicy stews and soups.

Breakfast for many Ghanaians might consist of a savoury dish, although some, of course, will have a sweetened porridge of some kind (e.g. one made from cornmeal), or a local sweet bread with butter, topped off by a steaming hot mug of "Milo" (a popular chocolate drink).

Akan people (who form one of the dominant ethnic groups in the country) might often have fufu (a doughy, moist ball usually made by pounding boiled yam and plantain together) with goat meat soup, for lunch, or perhaps fried plantain with black-eyed bean stew, and a grainy food called gari, which is made from cassava.
