As additional information on the capture of New Orleans, it should be noted that the city in 1860 was the 6th largest one in the USA. It was the commercial heart of the Deep South. New Orleans was a wealthy city and became a source of troops and supplies for the Confederate army. Its location at the mouth of the Mississippi River made it a prime target for the Union. Farragut's fleet included four heavy warships, a number of gunboats and a flotilla of twenty mortar boats.
The city was defended by two forts, plus a number of smaller fortifications. The forts were well armed and had a good view of the river and surrounding flats. The Confederates had some improvised ironclads and gunboats of various sizes. They were, however, out gunned & out numbered by Farragut's fleet. The battle took from April 16 to the 29th and the city surrendered.
