The claiming of Canada for France was one achievement of Jacques Cartier [December 31, 1491-September 1, 1557]. The describing and mapping of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and of the shores of the Saint Lawrence River was another. The naming of the future country of Canada was still another.

Specifically, Cartier called the New France the 'Country of Canadas'. He took the name from the Iroquois name for two large aboriginal settlements. One was the Stadacona settlement, which became Québec City. Another was the Hochelaga settlement, which became Montréal Island.
