The southern soldier was more knowledgeable on firearms, as most hunted for food. The southern soldiers were also had more knowledge of survival in the woods such as which trees and plants could be eaten.

They had much more factories to create war supplies as well as an already planned, strong government.

The Union also had an agricultural economy that would be far from the major battlefield during the war. The Union also had a population of about 23 million people from which it could enlist & later draft for its army.
