A temperate deciduous forest has many types of vegetation within it. A few examples are: ferns, mosses and lichens, many types of flowers, rhododendrons, azaleas, huckleberries and mountain laurel. There are also a great variety of trees, such as dogwood, basswood, poplar, hemlock, buckeye, maple and magnolia.
The
midlatitude deciduous forest
is found primarily in North America, Europe, and Eastern China in the Humid Subtropical and Humid Continental Climate regions. This type of forest consists of several layers of tree, shrub, and herb growth. Many of the taller trees that comprise this forest are oak, maple, beech, and elm. The forest canopy can range between 60-100 feet (18-30 m) in height. This forest loses its leaves each year as winter approaches and also supports dense undergrowth. Depending on the type of soils, broadleaf trees associated with this forest type may be out-competed by evergreen pine trees. In some cases, deciduous and evergreen trees grow near each other and cannot be easily separated into different biomes.
The natural vegetation in the temperate zone are grasses. The grasslands varies in size from country to country. In the Prairies the grasses are tall whereas in the the Steppes the grasses are short.
