There are three types of cellular modems - cell phones, aircards, and cellular routers. All three of these have the same purpose which is to connect a computer to the internet.
Many cellular companies make modems for computers, they are usually cards or USB peripherals. Verizon, AT&T and Cricket all offer these types of modems for your laptop or desktop computer.
Soft modems and dial up modems are some of the more dated modems that were created. They are considered to be land line modems since they used wired connections and ports.
Advantage: Modems not expensive. Higher transmission speed. Telephone can still be used. :)

Without DSL and Cable as an option, your two choices are satellite and cellular modems. Satellite will be extremely slow, especially on the upstream. Cellular modems provide decent service, if you have 3G coverage in your area. However, it is at the low end of the high-speed rankings, but much better than dial-up.

You are not alone, there are many people living in areas not covered by broadband. Do you have a cellular telephone and get decent reception? If so, then check with your carrier to see if they offer broadband cellular modems. These modems are not as fast as DSL or cable, but will at least be faster than dial-up.

All available information points to Cardinal Connecta modems being WinModems, not hardware modems. Assuming it was actually a hardware modem, it would work, since all hardware modems map to a COM port and need no special software or drivers to be operated.
