Columbus was not a nice man. He cut off the hand of a Native American when he didn't bring a large amount of gold to him. On the ship he offered to pay the first man to spot land, but when it happened he kept the money for himself. In his diary he wrote that the natives he found would make good slaves in the future. While sailing he threw a man overboard that made him mad. Politically he made up the " Columbus " persona because he was from a powerful Spanish family that didn't get along with the crown, but he wanted money from them. So, he had a false identity.
