∙ 9y agoSome cultural holiday traditions in Russia include celebrating Christmas on January 7th and not on December 25th as we do in the U.S.. The people of Russia partake in a 40 day fast prior to their Christmas celebration and that ends on January 6th.

Since New Year's Day, January 1st, precedes the Russian Christmas, it is often celebrated as a more important holiday. However, some Russians observe two Christmases and two New Year's. The first Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, and the second New Year's celebration takes place on January 14th. The Russian Santa Claus is known as Father Frost. He leaves presents under the New Year's tree.
