Before the war we were one of the major grain baskets of Europe, with a GDP exceeding that - for instance - of Denmark. During the Communist regime the leaders tried to prove we could do anything and everything, so we tried our hand at all sorts of industrial branches, many bankrupt now. Our agriculture is practically dead, we still have some steel plants, chemical plants, mines (very rich, but poorly managed), natural gas, oil, some light industry factories (mostly footwear and textiles), plus building material factories and other factories processing the local raw materials, car plants and so on.
