The single most powerful argument is that of personal freedom. Many drugs are not as powerful or as dangerous as alcohol, and some people take the view that if alcohol is legal, certain drugs should be legal as well.

1. Not as much money would have to be spent on law enforcement and prisons. People used drugs a lot in the late 1800's too, but they were not arrested for it. They'd embarrass themselves, relatives would cover for them, they'd sleep it off, etc. Yes, there would still be extreme cases like the addicted Doctor Who mutilated and killed a prostitute back then and later committed suicide while in prison, but making drugs illegal hasn't prevented such things. In recent years, people addicted to meth or bath salts have mutilated people, and that was with drugs illegal.

2. More people would be given responsibility over their lives and the right to decide what they put in their bodies. Sure, some would misuse this responsibility, but why take away this right from others who either knowingly use illicit drugs as medications or who use them for recreation, but responsibly? Why impose upon the many to protect the few? If enough people act irresponsibly, then society would adapt to where more parents would teach their children not to use, and there would be all the Horror stories and missteps of others to guide the rest.

3. There would be more spiritual freedom. Indigenous peoples have traditionally used psychoactive substances, including ayahuasca, peyote, psychedelic mushrooms, cannabis, etc. To them, it is a spiritual exercise, not a recreation. Many who want to take spiritual journeys with the aid of chemicals are prevented by laws which limit such.

4. Addiction could be dealt with as a health problem, not a crime problem. Doctors and therapists would be able to help people more effectively with better dialog since there would be no possibility of arrest just for selling or using. Now, there is more incentive to lie about drug use.

5. Drugs would likely be inexpensive, since anyone could grow or manufacture them. Imagine a bag of cocaine the size of a bag of sugar and available nearly as inexpensive. That could remove the crime factor. Just think if a group of addicts decided to go in together on a huge bag of their substance of choice and stay high for several weeks without committing crimes.

6. Legalization would remove the forbidden factor.Rebellious types would no longer feel the need to rebel to drugs if they were not seen as this awful thing. A good number would just try them and move on.

7. Medical research would be more open and free. Even non-doctors could participate in the research. That is how it was in the early days of medicine. There were a number of maverick, self-styled "scientists" who made important discoveries while messing around with chemicals. Anesthesia was discovered by recreational drug users. Nitrous oxide was first used by recreational users and then dentists to put their patients to sleep. Chloroform was discovered as an anesthetic at a drug-sniffing party. Someone passed it to the guy who is credited for discovering its value as an anesthetic, and he passed out and fell out of his chair. Its first medical usage was during childbirth. That woman named her baby Anastasia in honor of the chloroform. But it is quite a dangerous drug for medical uses, and safer anesthetics have since been discovered. The value of cocaine as a local anesthetic was also discovered by recreational users. Then scientists created a synthetic version which had very little abuse potential, thus yielding Novocaine.
