They are an hate crime target. Many gay, bisexual and transgenic people are still killed in hate crimes nowadays, even in developed countries like the USA.
To be an open gay person can be a synonym of lose your job, be harder to find a new one, lose family, lose friends and be described for the rest of your life as a Gay and not just a Person.
Simple things like being introduced as "This is my gay friend" or "That is James. He is gay" are clear disguised discriminatory elements.
