Blue has become the color used to represent Democrats on political maps.

I am not sure that the party had anything to do with choosing this color. The color red is assigned to the Republicans, but red seems more fitting for the Democrat political goals since socialists have long been known as Reds.

In 1976, NBC Nighty News anchorman John Chancellor had an electronic map of the US built for election night. Each state had a red bulb and a blue one behind it; if Jimmy Carter (the Democrat) won a state it would be lit in red; if Gerald Ford (the Republican) won it the state would be lit in blue. (For what it's worth, if you went to Europe the conservative parties would be marked in blue and the liberal ones in red.) It flipped around for a few years.

In 2000, Al Gore was in blue and George W. Bush in red. It took weeks to nail that election down. The press talked about "blue states" and "red states," and now Democrats are blue and Republicans are red.
