Their languages are completely different for one. Chinese is a Sino-Tibetan language most famous for its use of tones to indicate lexical meaning, whereas Japanese is an Altaic language, whose origins still remain a mystery to modern linguists. The only real simularity they share language-wise is the fact that Japanese uses several thousand Chinese characters in their own writing. Japanese history is marked at the same time by even stricter isolationism than China and a much more aggresive political agenda of expansion. For centuries NO foreigners were allowed on Japanese soil and yet the Japanese undertook several attempts at creating an empire, mostly in Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. Now the Japanese economy is second only to the US in terms of size and world-wide importance. China on the other hand has remained focused primarily on areas where there is already a large Chinese population. Although I have to admit I'm no expert on either Japanese or Chinese history. The Japanese and Chinese hate each other. Japanese war atrocities committed against Chinese civilians during WWII, the vast majority of which have gone unapologized for, create a very difficult roadblock to mutual acceptance. Japan accepted US aid after the war and remains close allies, whereas China received little to none, either because they refused it or the offer was never extended to them. In fact until the presidency of Richard Nixon, the Western World did not recognize the People's Republic of China, instead referring to Taiwan as the only legitimate China. China is communist and their record has been marred by numerous human rights abuses, although they do seem to be getting progressively better. Japan is a constitutional monarchy, where the Emperor is little more than a figurehead. Believe me, there are a lot more than this, but to find them out you'll have to find someone more knowledgable than myself.
