Anything can be a distraction. Here are some common ones for modern students:

  • Cellphones!
  • Music - studies have shown that soft, instrumental music can help you concentrate better, but any other kind is just a distraction, especially if it has words.
  • Internet - yes, even having it on the computer in the background makes you want to open up a window, and then you're distracted by Facebook or Twitter or LOLs
  • Internal Distractions - today's students are more stressed out because they have more to worry about than in previous decades - more work for the classes, more going on outside of school, and a more stressful home environment
