You usually catch one directly from someone who has one, or from contact with their respiratory droplets from sneezes or coughs. You can get catch these viruses during the brief time they are in the air as you breathe or from touching where the droplets landed after they quickly fell out of the air (approximately a 6 foot diameter around the sneezer).
