There are two main (principal) islands that form New Zealand. The North Island and the South Island. The North Island is home to such cities as Auckland and Rotorura and of course the capital Wellington. The South Island is home to such cities as Christchurch and Queenstown. The South Island is known for its adventure sports. Other well-known Islands are Stewart Island, Tiritiri Matangi and Rangitoto.
The North Island, which is also known by the Maori name of Te Ika-a-Maui, (which translates to mean the fish of Maui), and the South Island, which is also known by the Maori name of Te Waka-a-Maui (which translates to the canoe of Maui).
The North Island
The South Island
Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu
The two main islands of New Zealand is the North Island and the South Island. (Can be found on a map)
The north island and the south island. Seriously.
New Zealand is made up of the North Island, the South Island and, further to the south, the much smaller Stewart Island (Rakiura).
The third most populated island in New Zealand is Waiheke in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland.
The Maori name for the North Island is Te Ika A Maui (the fish of Maui) while the South island is Te Wai Pounamu (The place of Greenstone) or Te Waka A Maui (the canoe of Maui).
The two largest and the main islands are the North Island and the South Island. There is also Stewart Island. Then there are a number of small islands dotted around it like Waiheke Island and Auckland Island.
Hope this helps
Rather unimaginatively they are called the North island and South island. The Maori names are Te Ika-a-Maui (North island) this means the fish of Maui, and Te Waka-a-Maui (the canoe of Maui) for the South island.
Or more commonly for the South island, Te Wai Pounamu(the waters of pounamu (jade / greenstone)).

The Maori name for the North Island is Te Ika A Maui (the fish of Maui) while the South island is Te Wai Pounamu (The place of Greenstone) or Te Waka A Maui (the canoe of Maui).
