Some of the principles of collective bargaining are the following:

  • It is a group process, wherein one group representing the employers and the other representing employees sit together to negotiate terms of employment.
  • There are several steps in the process. The starting point is the presentation of the charter of demands and the last stage is the reaching of an agreement.
  • Negotiations form an important aspect of the process of collective bargaining. There is considerable scope for discussion, compromise, or mutual give and take in the collective bargaining deliberations rather than confrontation.
  • It is a bipartite process. The employers and the employees are the only parties involved in the bargaining process. The conditions of employment are regulated by those directly concerned.

Those concept of collective bargaining needs to be understood in its proper perspective. It is not merely a replacement for marketplace haggling by a group of workmen with an employer.

Unions cannot GET anything employers are not willing to give.

Bargaining is TRADING: employers have the jobs, pay, benefits, and power. If unions want some of that, they give up stuff, like the right to strike or grieve.
