Pagan
The word paganism is an umbrella term for all non-abrahamic religions. The abrahamic religions all claim lineage from the Biblical Abraham. Thus, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and their descendents are abrahamic. All other religions are non-abrahamic and are therefore pagan.
The term comes from the Latin paganus, which means "country dweller". As Christianity was gaining a foothold in southern Europe, it spread to the cities first. Therefore, the vast majority of people who lived out in the country still held to their traditional beliefs. These people were thus called pagans.
Heathen
The word heathen is synonymous with the word pagan, however it derives from the Old Norse word heiðinn instead of the Latin paganus.
Many Germanic neo-pagans, follows of Ãsatrú, prefer the word heathen because of its Northern European root, and some may even vehemently reject the term pagan.
