It couldn't be any simpler... If you were swimming to the bottom of a lake you are losing sunlight. Sunlight produces heat. When you lose heat it gets colder. The deeper you go, the colder it gets because of the loss of sun.

it depends on which lake it is. It depends on many things, 1) where the lake is at 2) What is in the lake 3) how is the weather around the lake.
