1. Music...There aren't many venues and few radio stations...to be viable they have to appeal to a large percentage of the population (classic rock, country, and pop). If you're older than 12 and like music with any sort of innovation, you're screwed. (That said, I love bluegrass and West Virginia Folk Music, but the broader musical community doesn't exist.)
2. Geography...Most West Virginians have below average incomes, so they rarely travel. This is particularly a problem for the young, as they can rely on GPS devices to get them around, the concept of examining a map is somewhat foreign to them. Add to that, there's only one major urban center within an hour of all of West Virginia and in some cases, not within 3 or more hours, and your place in the broader world isn't really all that important to a lot of folks.
3. Quality...Most families have tight budgets for things like food...parents here are far more likely to buy whatever is cheapest by the dozen. A taste is acquired for sugary fatty foods. The perfect plate of chili-cheese fries is going to be considered cooking genius while the finest prepared steak will likely pass as just another steak. You will spend much less time seeing people buying "quality brands" or even noticing brands to begin with. Unless, you're talking about motor vehicles.
