When it looks like pretty bad weather coming, keep checking the weather forecast, and look at the sky once in a while. If a tornado warning alert comes on the forecast for your area, take shelter in the lowest part of your house in the smallest, sturdiest, room without windows on the first floor, or a basement or storm cellar if you have it.

Cover yourself with a heavy mattress underneath a sturdy piece of furniture. If you live in a house or apartment that has only one floor and flimsy walls, either get in a bath tub and cover yourself with a heavy mattress, or squeeze into a small closet and cover yourself likewise with a heavy mattress.

Do not open any windows, and try to get far away from them in case the wind or debris shatter them, turning them into swiftly rotating glass missile shards.

If you're outside or in a car as a tornado forms or approaches, get out of the car, and if there is one, lay down in a gully or depression, like a ditch.

If you feel a tingling on your skin or your hair begins to feel staticy when lightning flashes, it means you are about to be struck. The only thing you can do to hopefully save yourself is to immediately hit the ground belly down, though some say simply squat down and make your body as small as possible, and hope the lightning doesn't reach you.
