Gnostic's central belief is based on an awareness of of "Creator", or of a Super Conscious being, but one who was not without flaw or error. This "higher being" was the spiritual equivalent of "God", but an imperfect one.

The Virgin Mother was one of the chosen (as well as her cousin, Elizabeth, who became John the Baptist's wife) daughters of the Essenes (a gnostic sect who lived privately and humbly); Mary was secluded since the age of 4 to learn and put into everyday practice, the deepest of the Gnostic's beliefs and rituals.
Agnosticism is the opposite: they have a sense their is a higher power, but they do not know, and therefore can't define what they "sense" or why they belief there is a higher power.
