The Bible has very helpful advice for marriage.

Forgiveness, patience, and sacrifice are major themes to practice in marriage.

For example:

Ephesians 4:31-32
"Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you."

Ephesians 5:21-33
"And be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her
...
Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband."

Other passages to meditate on are: 1 Peter 3:1-11 and 1 Corinthians 7:2-4.

God created marriage as a "microcosm" of man's familial relationship with his creator; as God is revealed as a "family." It's one of, if not the, primary "training ground" in life whereby man gets his first taste of "caring for, and about" [learning to overcome our selfish human nature, and learn to love and respect] others.

"The [Holy] Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD: and if Children, then HEIRS; HEIRS OF GOD, and JOINT-HEIRS WITH CHRIST; if so that we suffer with Him, that WE MAY BE ALSO GLORIFIED TOGETHER." (Rom.8:16-17)

Those whom God is calling to become the future "kings and priests" [the future rulers and leaders] of His coming Kingdom [see Rev.5:10] know and understand that "marriage" is a "sacred, holy, God-designed and ordained" institution.

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands, AS UNTO THE LORD... Husbands, love your wives, EVEN AS CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH, and GAVE HIMSELF FOR IT..." (Eph.5:22-25).

Marriage is a DIVINE RELATIONSHIP... not something contractually created by man

.

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands, AS UNTO THE LORD. For the husband is the HEAD OF THE WIFE, even as CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH... Therefore AS THE CHURCH IS SUBJECT UNTO CHRIST, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

Husbands, LOVE YOUR WIVES, even as CHRIST ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH, and GAVE HIMSELF FOR IT..." (Eph.5:22-25).

Husbands should be emulating and exemplifying CHRIST in the marriage.

And the wife exemplifies the church... DUALLY... as the church pictures both God's Wife, collectively, as well as all of His Children, individually, who bear, edify and teach His Children.

"For we are members OF HIS BODY, of HIS FLESH, and OF HIS BONES. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

This is a GREAT MYSTERY; but I SPEAK CONCERNING CHRIST AND THE CHURCH." (verses 30-32)

Marriage is as divine [and Divinely-ordained] a relationship between a man and woman, as mankind's relationship is [or should be] to his Creator [barring man's early decision to "choose the wrong god to worship"] -- thus causing mankind to "sin" [disobey the Commandments - I John 3:4] against his Creator.

"For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet offend in one point, HE IS GUILTY OF ALL. For He that said, 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,' said also, 'Do not kill [murder]..." (James 2:10-11).

"Surely AS A WIFE treacherously departeth from HER HUSBAND, SO HAVE YE DEALT treacherously WITH ME..." (Jer.3:20)

God's "covenant" with ancient Israel was A MARRIAGE VOW! The simple age-old marriage agreement that has since gone by the wayside regarding the content of modern marriage vows: THE ANCIENT MARRIAGE VOW FOR A WIFE TO OBEY HER HUSBAND!

"Now therefore, IF YE WILL OBEY MY VOICE INDEED, and KEEP MY COVENANT, then ye shall be A PECULIAR TREASURE UNTO ME [as a husband treasures his beloved wife] above all 3people... and ye shall be unto me A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS, and AN HOLY NATION [family]..." (Ex.19:5-6).

Israel AGREED TO GOD'S MARRIAGE VOW!

"And ALL THE PEOPLE ANSWERED TOGETHER, and said, 'ALL THAT THE LORD HATH SPOKEN [His demand and command to OBEY HIS VOICE] WE WILL DO..." (verse 8).

But, Israel didn't obey her Husband:

"...'WHICH MY COVENANT THEY BRAKE, although I WAS AN HUSBAND UNTO THEM,' saith the LORD..." (Jer.31:32).

"For I spake NOT unto your father, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, CONCERNING BURNT OFFERINGS or SACRIFICES: but THIS THING COMMANDED I THEM, saying, 'OBEY MY VOICE, and I will be your God [Husband and Father], and ye shall BE MY PEOPLE [My Children, My Wife, My FAMILY]: and WALK YE IN ALL THE WAYS THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU[learn to Obey My Commandments - see Ex.20 for the particulars of what God "voiced aloud" as His Marriage Vows to His intended Wife - LEARN TO OBEY MY COMMANDMENTS and Love one another], THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU." (Jer.7:22-23)

So many false modern churches teach that God's Commandments ARE A BURDEN! But God says that keeping His Commandments [practicing - meditating on and OBEYING His Ten Laws about How to LOVE Him, and one another] aren't a BURDEN... but FOR OUR WELL BEING... so THAT IT [Life in general] MAY BE WELL WITH YOU.

Which is the very same thing any father wants for his wife and children. That's what the Bible teaches about marriage.

  • The "two becoming one" concept, first cited in Gen.2:24

, was quoted by Jesus in his teachings on marriage and recorded almost identically in the gospels of both Matthew and Mark.[Matt.19:4–6]

    [Mk.10:7–9]

  • The Apostle Paul also quoted the Genesis 2:24 passage in Ephesians5:1

    [

    5]

Describing it as a "profound mystery", he analogizes it to "Christ and the church".[Eph.5:32]

Then Paul states that every husband must love his wife as he loves himself.[5:33]

  • The Apostle Paul calls on husbands and wives to be subject to each other out of reverence for Christ—mutual submission.[Eph.5:21]
  • The Apostle Peter calls husbands and wives "joint heirs of the grace of life" and cautions a husband who isn't considerate to his wife and does not treat her with respect that his prayers will be hindered.[1Peter3:7]

The greatest reference to marriage that I know is taken from Genesis chapter 2 verses 23and 24 "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Together they are the jewel in the crown of their lives, the sanctity of marriage is priceless when a man and his wife live in accordance with Gods laws for did He not command them again in Genisis 1: 28 ...to Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." Love thy wife as thou would thyself. Finally in Ecclesiates Ch.9 v 9 "9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou clovest all the days of the life ........"

Marriage is often indirectly discussed in the context of husbands, wives, weddings, etc. so searching just for the word 'marriage' will not find all the relevant passages. Also, forgiveness, patience, and sacrifice are major themes to practice in marriage.

A few places to start:

- Mark 10:6-8

Genesis 29:26

Laban replied, "It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.

Exodus 2:21

Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage.

AND

The word marriage is used 17 times in the NKJV. Eg:

Exo 21:10 If he takes another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marriage rights.

Ezr 9:14 should we again break Your commandments, and join in marriage with the people committing these abominations? Would You not be angry with us until You had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant or Survivor?

Mat 22:2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son,

Mat 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

Heb 13:4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

The Bible speaks of marriage from the very first of Adam to Eve in Genesis to the last mentioned in Revelation of the firstfruits as the Bride to Christ.

Basically, the state of matrimony was designed for a man and a woman to become one and share in God's Plan of enlarging His future Family. There are many Scriptures on this topic with the do's and don'ts of a married person. Here is an overviewing Scripture on marriage:

Hebrews 13:4New International Version (NIV)

4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
