atrolabe came first, the astrolabe was invented before the sextant, and the sextant was the model that made the compass
A map should include a key,a way to measure distance, and a compass rose.
scale in art means the size or proportion of the model you are drawing.
Scale, title,legend/key, compass rose, and a date.
A compass traverse may be used to map a small area accurately or to conduct an open-ended traverse. A traverse is often used in mapping for resource inventories. A compass traverse is time-consuming, so it is a method used for making scale maps of relatively small areas. It is a relatively simple step-by-step process to measure bearings and distances on the ground and then draw them to scale. This process therefore offers a hands-on way to clearly see and work with the basic elements of scale maps - the relationship between scale, distance and direction
Describes and explains methods used to measure distance while navigating a map with a compass
Navigating by sight, using maps and the shape of the coastline Using handheld instruments to measure the position of the sun and stars Using the Earth's magnetic field to determine direction Tying maps to databases
Astrolabe: Used by early geographers to determine the position of celestial objects in the sky, aiding in navigation and mapping. Compass: Revolutionized navigation and mapping by providing a reliable method to determine direction, crucial for early explorers and cartographers. Scale maps: Allowed geographers to accurately represent the size and distance relationships of features on Earth's surface, improving the precision of maps and spatial analysis. Aerial photography: Transformed geographic research by providing detailed and bird's-eye-view images of landscapes, enabling geographers to analyze terrains, land use, and changes over time with greater accuracy.
To read an astrolabe, level the plum bob, the degree scale, the altitude, and the protractor.
More than 3000 years ago Chinese feng-shui practitioners used lodestone - a naturally occurring magnet to orient in the environment and find iron rich ores; probably not for navigation at this time. Scale maps (of geographic areas) were attempted even earlier but were fraught with limited accuracy. Scale plans of buildings and cities were drawn up at least 4000 years ago. The Astrolabe was used over 1500 years ago (there are even some Bronze age (3000 years old) remnants that could be astrolabe parts) The compass as we know it is about 1000 years old. Relatively accurate scale maps developed over the ages and became useful about 400 years ago. (In the 1970's maps of South America were shown to have considerable mistakes, this was discovered by satellite imagery)

The four main parts of a map are the title, legend, compass rose, and scale. The title provides information about the map's subject or area, the legend explains the symbols and colors used on the map, the compass rose shows the cardinal directions, and the scale indicates the ratio of distance on the map to actual distance on the ground.
