Traditionally, portraits tell you less about the person or what the artist thinks than what the patron wants to say about the subject (the person painted).
Traditional portraits are full of carefully chosen symbolic objects that tell the subject's class (wealth, social position, etc ...) religious piety, philosophies/priorities (do they stand next to a cannon or to a bassinet?), virility (is that a lion in the background?). Aristocratic portraits are often riddled in vanity. Portraits are equal parts art and Propaganda. They tell as much about the time (it's attitudes, etc ...) as they do the subject.
