Nonsurgical treatments consist of wrist ice wraps, carpal tunnel braces, and a night-time splint to sleep in. You also may get pain relief with Pain relieving creams and gels. If symptoms are not too flared up, mild hand stretching etc may help. NSAIDS like advil can help as can a cortisone injection in the carpal tunnel area.

If the carpel tunnel is the result of Rheumatoid arthritis I would give the ice a miss. Before I had the problem operated on I found the best thing to do was to hang the hands down near the ground and just get the fingers moving for a while.

What cause carpal tunnel?

Hi, There are no exercises which cause carpal tunnel syndrome. CTS is caused by an inflammation in the carpal tunnel ( which is made up of the carpal bones in the hand and the flexor retinaculum (a ligament) ). The inflammation can be caused by a number of things, eg. artheritis of the carpal bones, tendonitis or any condition that causes oedema for example, pregnancy. Some of these things will go away on there own, but some may require medical intervention. There are exercises which will induce the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, which is anything that puts pressure on the carpal tunnel for example when you have your hands bent downwards towards your wrists. But this is not the pathological cause of the syndrome Hope this helps Hi, There are no exercises which cause carpal tunnel syndrome. You probably either injured the nerves directly due ott he vibration or caused swelling of the hands and wrist which is not pinching a nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome). If you do not continue to use the hands in a repetitive manner (such as typing) it will most likely go away.

Does workman's comp cover carpal tunnel when you didn't have it before you switched to a job at work that involves a lot of computer work?

Well it MAY..the real question is can you Medically prove that one you didn't have carpal tunnel syndrome before the job switch and more importantly can you prove that the job switched caused the CTS and not just aggravated it or that hobbies or non-work related activities didn't cause your carpal tunnel symptoms? Every state is different, so you need to go to your states website (ie state.gov) It has pretty much been determined that computer work does not routinely CAUSE carpal tunnel. Harvard did a landmark study that you can find. Many lawyers still claim it does....but the cases have gone down quite a bit from the 90's when everybody was jumping on the ol keyboard bandwagon.
