You need to get more fiber in your diet. For quick help try Prune Juice or Prunes, these work well. Make sure you drink plenty of water to prevent this in the future. Also eat more cereals that have fiber in them. For a more urgent remedy see the Related Questions below.

Stay hydrated and exercise, this will help prevent constipation. You can try over the counter meds like Pepto Bismol or Diovol. But read the label first to see that they are right for you. There are also over the counter stool softeners like Senokot you can try.

Try eating 2or 3 kiwifruit a day they are a natural laxative. You can also eat a lot of bran cereal.

Some of you may encounter the problem of a bowel movement fewer than three times a week. To find out the solution to this problem, you must first understand what causes constipation. Well, there are many causes of constipation and the two most common are dehydration and not having enough fibre in your daily diet.

Dehydration

Even though there is no scientific research showing that drinking more liquids will improve the problem of constipation but there are reports of people saying that it helped to relief them from constipation with more intakes of liquids like water and juice. However drinking liquids that contain caffeine (coffee and coke) and even alcohol will worsen the problem of constipation because these are liquids that cause dehydration… so as much as possible, stay out from them!

Not enough fibre in your daily diet

People who are less likely to become constipated are those who eat a high-fibre diet. The most common causes of constipation are diets that are low in fibre or high in fats (eh. cheese, eggs & meats). Fibre can be found in fruits, vegetables and grains that the body cannot digest, so taking more fruits and vegetables is good for you!

Actually, the treatment for constipation depends on the cause, severity and duration of constipation, but in most cases a change in diet and lifestyle will help to improve the situation.

More fiber (beans, prunes, salads, lentil soup etc.). This may sound kind of gross, but an old army trick is to but some charcoal in water (ground up, of course) and to drink it. It is supposed to clear up the stomach. It tastes pretty bad, though.
Prunes -- will always work if you eat enough of them. Soak dried prunes in hot water over night. They taste better that way.

Figs, dried or fresh

Apples

The most common cause of constipation is lack of fiber in your diet. Fiber provides traction, making elimination easier. Try eating some high-fiber foods. You should be able to go in a day or so after eating them. For a list of high-fiber foods, see the Related Question below. You could also try a fiber supplement like Metamucil or Benefiber.

If eating high-fiber foods or fiber supplements doesn't work, there are over-the-counter laxatives that you can buy.

The best thing I know of to take is Benefiber.

You can get that stuff at Wal-mart or practically any store.
