The Aswal tribe is spread in many parts of India. Aswals belong to one of the highest ranks of the Rajput clan, with Gotras like Bharadwaja, etc. Aswals are Royal Rajputs and mainly belong to the Garhwali tribes in the mountain ranges of Uttarakhand. Aswals of the Garhwali region are descendants of one of the many Rajput clans, the Chauhans.They are agnivanshi which is sub clan ofsuryavansh As per the history of Rajputs, Aswals were the rulers of kingdoms or held the ranks of army commanders(Senapati). They were supposed to be intelligent and physically strong so were allocated to important ranks in the army. To spread their kingdoms, they gradually shifted from Rajasthan to North India, now called as Uttarakhand. They have been migrated from ranthambore. Aswal means ashva sawar as the chauhans were coming on their horses. There is a proverb in garwhal that "aadho aswal, addho garwhal" means half aswal , half garwhal. Half aswal because they are not real aswal as real aswal are khateek and half garwhal because they ruled west and east garwhal before panwar.

Aswals from the mountain ranges of Uttarakhand are very small in number, ranging from a few hundreds in the mountains to a total population of about 5000 worldwide. Many have migrated to the plains and foreign countries like the U.S.A. and U.K.

The Khateek Aswals from Punjab seem to have taken the Aswal name fron the Aswals from the mountain ranges. THE RAJPUT Aswal and the khateek aswal are both very different things not to be confused."The Himalayan Gazateer " of E. Atkinson consider the to be come from plains belonging to one of the highest kshatriya clan and different from the majoritarian Khas people of uttarakhand. They are distributed in kumaon(Bageshwar,Ranikhet,Berinag etc) and garhwal regions of Uttarakhand.Pt.Ganga Dutt Upreti in his book "Kumaon ki Fauji Zatiya" keep them in 26 best warrior caste of kumaon But nowdays many SCs of lower caste in migrating form mountains to plains change their caste to aswal to acquire prestige in society.So do not confuse with them
