Rust is caused by oxygen combining with the metal, in this case iron and steel. The Acid in the cola strip off contaminants and increase the speed at which this process takes place. Acid also has oxygen in it and when it meets up with various other items it makes more oxygen available for the process. Oil protects by preventing oxygen from getting to the metal.

Carbonated Beverages like the ones you've mentioned contain med. Ph acids in regard to water (e.g. 5.5) or in some cases, med. Ph bases again in regard to water (e.g. 8.5), as a result, they eventually stimulate corrosion as has been demonstrated by placing a human tooth into a vial filled with Coca Cola and returning within I believe a week to find it completely corroded. However, different materials require vastly different time spans and exposure levels to rust. Iron and Copper rust as a result of continuous exposure to rains and snow melting streams over the years throughout the springs and the like. Since rain water is of a lower acidity of alkalinity depending on the region (e.g. near a mining complex, near an oil refinery, in a rural setting etc.) it takes longer to cause metals like iron to oxidize than coca cola; assuming that the nails are iron or steel, aren't galvanized and are factory-new, it would hence take less than a couple years for them to begin to rust. However, if the nails were already rusty, exposing them to carbonated beverages would in fact cause the rust to wither away and actually clean the nail before beginning to corrode it themselves.
