Sometimes, only if the area hurts, itches, burns or is red is it inflammed. If a body part is swolen but seems normal besides that it could be from something else like a lack or protiens. It could also be a sign of your body trying to fight a virus or something.

When you exercise your body holds water until the healing process is passed. in inflammatory response the body holds water and in some cases the inflammation remains a long time and the water keep piling up and the high level of water can create pressure and pain when blood is trying to flow around the body. Additional pain is the body`s way of letting the brain know something is wrong.

The swelling and associated with the inflammatory response arecaused by the affects of inflammatory mediators. Some mediators make it more likely that fluid will leave the blood vessels and enter the tissues, causing swelling. This swelling itself can cause pain. Other mediators also make the area more sensitive to pain.
